DIY Shinguards

My sweet little boy started soccer this week.  Since we probably wont put him in year round and we are saving for a house, I didn't want to pay $20 for shin guards he will wear for only a few weeks.  So I decided to make some.
I dug around in my fabric box and let the boy pick the fabric and I found some foam sheets I had from a  previous craft.  I used the boy's shins as a guide and used a marker to mark the bottom of the foam where I wanted it to be.
I used the foam as a pattern for the fabric and cut the fabric about half an inch bigger than the foam to allow for a seam allowance and the thickness of the foam.

I placed the elastic pieces inside( with the pretty sides inside, if using fabric with a right and wrong side) so they will be sewn into the seams.
I traced around the foam pieces to give myself a sewing guide- i offset the needle to made it just bigger than the foam so it will fit in side when I am done.  I left the top unsewn so I can put the foam inside
I clipped the curved bottom edges
then i turned it right side out and inserted the foam sheets.
Sew up the top edge and you are done
Since this is just preschool soccer I am not worried about him getting kicked really hard, so this provides just a little protection.  He is so excited to try them out tonight.
